Fisher Information Technology Center

What the Fisher IT Center Offers U. C. Berkeley Faculty Members

  1. Research - Opportunity to participate in or help to develop research programs, including related working papers and findings, and possible access to proprietary data within corporations. The Fisher IT Center is eager to sponsor research, including linking faculty members with the CIO and firms based on common interests and goals. For example, new activities in Services Sciences in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences involve several areas of interest to CIOs (security, search, document management, intellectual property, human factors, health care, etc.). Activities at Haas include application of IT to such areas as supply chain, marketing, accounting, business operations, entrepreneurship and the management of technology. Within the School of Information, intellectual property law, social concerns, organizational issues and new media are examples of focal areas. A list of interest areas based on interviews with CIOs and their groups is being prepared.

  2. ‘30-Free’ with CIOs - If you agree, as a U. C. Berkeley faculty member, you will visit the CIO’s local site to discuss mutually interesting subjects for 30 minutes (with possible consulting or sharing of data and other information by follow-on agreement if both desire it). A list of interest areas based on interviews with CIOs and their groups is being prepared.

  3. Student Training - Opportunity to assist in specific U. C. Berkeley IT training for students at all levels through the CIO group’s statement of desired goals. The university might agree to start special brief courses to address these needs. One of the Fisher IT Center faculty directors, Assistant Professor Terrence Hendershott, has agreed to teach an IT class starting in 2007 (spring semester) if high interest levels are shown. CIOs will fund these courses .

  4. Meetings - VIP invitations to U. C. Berkeley conferences, seminars, lectures, workshops. Examples: Center for Executive Development, Management of Technology Program, Entrepreneur’s forum, CITRIS series, etc. Faculty members will also be kept aware of the large array of IT-related events involving CIOs.

  5. Students - Opportunity to further engage with U. C. Berkeley students through providing support to externships and project work. U. C. Berkeley is considering an IS Clinic which will be a project room to house students who will work at U. C. Berkeley on projects for (and funded by) CIOs and other corporate executives.

  6. Research Papers - Access to research papers of other U. C. Berkeley scholars and faculty members in fields of interest to the CIOs. These may be linked on the Fisher IT Center web site and be made accessible to CIO members and U. C. Berkeley only.

  7. Executive Education - Opportunity to respond to requests from the CIO groups for special executive education, to be developed and presented by U. C. Berkeley faculty, provided sufficient interest is expressed and funding offered by the CIO group.

  8. Speaking Further opportunity to engage with students and other faculty by speaking or serving on a panel in another professor’s Class at U. C. Berkeley, provided sufficient interest is expressed.
